It may be hard to believe — does it feel as if we haven’t had a chance to see the candidates square off against each other? — but the biggest change in presidential primaries over the past decade is the dramatic reduction in the number of debates.

El experto en debates electorales, Manuel Campo Vidal, aseguró que la discusión pre electoral entre candidatos es fundamental, dado que se trata de un derecho de la ciudadanía que permite conocer a los postulantes y enriquece las justas electorales.

Las reformas al Código de la Democracia aprobadas por la Asamblea -y que esperan el pronunciamiento del Ejecutivo– incluyen la obligación de que los candidatos participen en debates durante la campaña de promoción.

Que en la lucha por el poder -a todos los niveles- sus aspirantes vayan al debate. Que planten sus ideas políticas, sus programas (de gobierno) para que el electorado los conozca “a la clara”.

“There’s this perception that debates are this great democratic tool, where voters can find out what candidates stand for and how good they really are,” says Vincent Pons, assistant professor of business administration. “But we find that debates don’t have any effect on any group of voters.”

The principal reason that TV debates have limited impact, according to research from Harvard Business School, is that 72% of voters make up their minds more than two months before the election – meaning few people will change their minds by the time candidates are behind the debate podiums.

The rules of televised election debates should be run by an independent commission.
