An analysis of randomised evaluationsconducted across the world allows some insights into the role of the media in improving the quality of political participation. It shows that it is indeed possible to deliver information through the media in a way that positively impacts citizen engagement in the democratic process, and that the magnitude and duration of impact varies by content type and delivery mechanism.
The following are examples of criteria used by debate sponsors from a range of countries to determine which candidates are invited to debate:
DNC Chair Tom Perez has announced 12 presidential primary debates to be held over the course of the 2020 cycle, with the first two occurring in June and July of this year.
Perez said his goals for the Democratic presidential primary debates are to (1) give the grassroots a bigger voice than ever before; (2) showcase our candidates on an array of media platforms; (3) present an opportunity for vigorous discussion about issues, ideas and solutions; and (4) reach as many potential voters as possible.
Law of Ukraine - “On the Elections of the President of Ukraine”
On Sunday, January 20, 2019, Nigerians and the world watched with disappointment as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) laboured to explain why Muhammadu Buhari, its presidential candidate who has been in power for over three and a half years, arrogantly absented himself from a presidential debate where he was expected to face the electorate and give account of his stewardship so far and seek their votes in next month’s polls.
Re-electionist Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III has filed a bill making electoral debates mandatory every campaign season.
La concejal María Laura Nievas presentó un proyecto de ordenanza que establece: ''la realización de un debate público preelectoral entre todos los candidatos a intendente de nuestra ciudad''.
While it is not yet clear whether the candidates, particularly those of the major political parties, have indicated interest in participating, some political parties that know the inadequacies, or outright hollowness of their candidates have started flying the malicious kite of aspersion on the debate.
